Stellar geography is in a sense alike to planetary geography in that it deals with physical characteristics. The characteristics, however, are quite different in nature: galactic geography deals less in tangible features and more in distance. For navigational purposes, space is divided into sectors, which are 10,000 square light-years in area. Space within territorial boundaries, of course, is often divided further into regions and zones per the jurisdiction of the reigning political body. Also, the concept of direction becomes much more vague in the cosmos; for simplicity, an arbitrary focal point is taken, and conventional directions (referred to as galactic north, south, east, and west) are assigned accordingly.
